Australia’s Women’s Blind Football Team, affectionately known as the Bilbies, are breaking new ground as they prepare to compete in their first-ever international tournament in Japan. Facing strong teams from England, Japan, and Argentina, the Bilbies are proudly showcasing their skills in one of the world’s most inclusive and rapidly growing sports.
This remarkable group of athletes and volunteers represents not only Australia but also the broader movement for inclusion in sport. However, unlike many national teams, the Bilbies receive no funding from Football Australia. They rely entirely on donations, sponsorships, and personal contributions to cover the costs of competing internationally.
Their participation is more than just about the game. It’s part of a global effort to secure the inclusion of women’s blind football in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles. Adding to their strength in Japan will be former Matilda star Casey Dumont, who is joining the team as their sighted goalkeeper.
The Bilbies’ journey symbolises hope and opportunity for blind and vision-impaired women in sports, paving the way for future generations. You can help by donating, sponsoring, or simply sharing their inspiring story.
