The Euros wrapped up on 27th July, before the Swiss Women’s Super League (Axa Women’s Super League, AWSL) kicked off a month later, on 23rd August. The games attracted more fans than ever. Attendances have so far increased by 42% compared to last season. We were able to see a similar rise in attendances at Women’s football games in England after the Euros in 2022, this just shows the significance of exposure to the sport.
Across the five games that were played on the opening day of the regular season of the AWSL, a total of 7,030 fans made their way to the games, the highest attendance was 5348 for the game between FC Basel and FC Aarau.
With this major increase, last season’s record attendance of 4,033 was already broken on matchday one of the regular season.
Since the start of the season, a total of more than 19,000 fans attended the 29 games that have been played so far, which equals an average of 679 fans per game.
To compare these numbers to the ones from the whole of the 2024/25 campaign, the average number of fans per game was 489.
What helps to keep the numbers rising, are the bigger stadiums the games are being played in. The opening game for FC Basel was played in St. Jakob Park Stadium, the same stadium where the Euros final was held. Most of the league’s games are usually held in smaller grounds or training centres. Since the demand is significantly higher than last year, bigger stadiums are being used for the regular season games if possible.
For the “Zurich Derby” between FC Zürich and Grasshopper Club Zürich, the men’s and the women’s games sometimes fall on the same day during the season. In that case, they hold the games at the same stadium, one in the afternoon and the other in the evening. Normally the derby is held at the Letzigrund Stadium in Zurich, in hope to attract a big number or supporters from both teams. Usually, the derby in Zurich is one of the highest attended games in the campaign, since both fanbases are from around the same area, comparable to the North London Derby in the WSL.
With plenty of games yet to be played until the season ends in April 2026, even higher attendances and maybe even more broken records are to be expected.
