It has been a long time coming for Poppy Pattinson, who received her first international cap in the March international break. It is difficult to think of another defender who deserves this recognition more than her right now. Having been the fresh new talent on the block when signing for Bristol City, to cementing herself as a first-team starter and integral part of the back line at Brighton and Hove Albion, Pattinson has proved that she is worthy enough of this honour.
Homegrown Talent
Having started her career at Sunderland and rising through the ranks in the North East, Poppy Pattinson is another player who has thrived after coming through the academy system, following in the footsteps of the likes of Beth Mead, Lucy Bronze and Steph Houghton, to name just a few.
Many Sunderland supporters would have welcomed the news of another one of their own reaching the biggest milestone in football when she stepped onto the pitch against Ukraine on the 3rd of March.
Pattinson then spent time with the Manchester City Academy whilst still studying at school, commuting each week for training, showing her true dedication to the sport from a young age.
The Next Big Thing
After penning a deal with Bristol City in 2018, Pattinson went on to make her mark in the 2018/19 season, helping the Robins finish 6th. She was an integral part of the backline despite being only 18.
As the team faced relegation the following season, Pattinson decided to leave the club at the end of her contract in 2020. A huge loss for Bristol City as the club even admitted they had offered a substantial contract to try and keep the youngster at the club. Pattinson then moved to Everton ahead of the 2020/21 season on a free transfer.
A Move To The South Coast
Pattinson moved to Brighton and Hove Albion ahead of the 2022/23 season, making 55 appearances in three years. One of the most memorable moments in a Brighton shirt was her first goal for the club in the FA Cup, scoring directly from a corner. It was during her time with the Seagulls that she was able to prove herself, being one of the first names on the team sheet.
She had been under the watchful eye of Sarina Wiegman during her time at Brighton & Hove Albion Women, earning multiple call-ups to the England U23s, but was unfortunate to suffer a long-term injury.
“Over the moon!”
Pattinson’s first senior cap came against Ukraine during the March international break. After seven years of consistent performances at club level, the moment marked a deserved reward for persistence and resilience. This is just the start of Poppy Pattinson’s journey with the Lionesses.
