George Weaver is a volunteer analyst at Liverpool Feds Women, a team competing in the National League, the third tier of women’s football in England. In an interview with Beyond the Pitch, George shared insights into his journey in women’s football, his current role, and the club’s ambitions.
Currently pursuing a PhD in Astronomy, George’s passion for football has always been evident. His journey into football analysis began through a friend who ran a Stoke City tactics account on social media. George noticed parallels between data analysis in Astronomy and football, which led him to explore football data, particularly for Stoke City, a team he supports. He reached out to local media to discuss his findings, which eventually connected him with Stoke City Women. Although he encountered difficulties formalising his role due to various regulations, his volunteer work there laid the foundation for his career in football analysis.
After leaving Stoke City Women around October/November, George continued his analytical pursuits, writing online and networking. This proactive approach led him to Liverpool Feds Women. Impressed by the club’s environment during his first visit, George quickly sensed its potential and positivity.
Liverpool Feds Women is an independent club with no affiliation to a men’s team. Competing as amateurs in a league with financially-backed teams, they rely heavily on their collective motivation. George praises the club’s atmosphere, describing it as one of ‘togetherness and team spirit’. Founded in the early 90s as a University football team, the club has since become a separate entity, managed entirely by volunteers, including the manager Leanne Duffy, assistant coach Marc, and goalkeeper coach Steve.
George’s role involves developing the club’s analytical capabilities, working closely with other staff members. Balancing his PhD studies with his volunteer work is challenging, but George emphasises that every member of the Liverpool Feds team shares this dedication, working tirelessly for the club.
Despite their commitment, the league remains extremely competitive, up against teams supported by Premier League clubs like Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Nevertheless, Liverpool Feds Women remain ambitious. Their primary goal is league survival, but they continually strive for improvement and higher league finishes, aiming to surpass their past performances each season.
A typical week for George involves analysing match footage and preparing reports on both their own performances and those of their opponents. He tailors his analysis to the needs of the manager and coaching staff, as well as to individual players, understanding their preferences to help them improve.
George is also quick to praise the club’s fanbase, which has grown significantly despite their financial limitations. He credits the club’s social media manager for fostering community engagement and encouraging locals to support the team. Family fun days play a crucial role in this, creating a welcoming environment for families and children.
Liverpool Feds Women exemplify professionalism, drive, and competitiveness. They welcome players who have faced challenges in other setups, understanding the difficulty of balancing amateur football with other life commitments. George underscores the importance of analysis in their pursuit of constant improvement, highlighting the dedication of both staff and players.
