Midfielder Hana Lowry was been named to the Matildas squad facing Germany and Haiti. Lowry recently made the move to Vålerenga in Oslo, Norway; however, the midfielder is well known within the A-League with 7 years of experience across Perth and Sydney.

Hana Lowry began her professional football career at Perth Glory in 2019. She spent 5 seasons playing at her hometown club, making over 72 appearances and scoring 11 goals at the club by the age of 21. Lowry was classified as one of the up-and-coming star players from early on in her professional career at Perth Glory and received the club’s Most Glorious Player Award for her performance in the 2023/2024 season.

Across Lowry’s time at Perth Glory she was also competing at an international level for the Junior Matildas and Young Matildas. In these international football teams Lowry gained experience at international friendlies and tournaments including the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica in 2022.

In 2024, at the age of 21, Hana Lowry made the decision to move across the country to one of Australia’s biggest football teams, Sydney FC. Sydney FC were coming off winning back-to-back championships and signed Lowry for a two-year contract. Lowry made her debut for the club and made strong impressions through her control and dominance on the ball within just a few games.

Lowry’s strong start as well as her experience with Perth Glory earned her a senior Matildas call-up for the first time in November 2024. Unfortunately just before entering the international team camp, Lowry tore her ACL in the Women’s Unite Round of the A-League. Lowry spent the next year in rehabilitation before making her long-awaited comeback for Sydney FC on the 7th of December 2025.

Hana Lowry came back to the squad quickly returning to her regular starting position in the midfield and scoring her first goal for Sydney FC on the 4th of February, a goal that was nominated for A-League Goal of the Month. Unfortunately another injury in mid-February kept Lowry on the sidelines for the remainder of her second season with Sydney FC.

Shortly after Sydney FC finished their A-League campaign, Lowry signed with Vålerenga in Oslo, Norway as the Toppserien season was in pre-season. Lowry made her first appearance for the club on the 12th of May and since has made 16 appearances and scored two goals. In just a few months, Lowry has become a regular starting player for Vålerenga, competing not only in the Toppserien but also in the UEFA Women’s Champions League Qualifying rounds, the UEFA Women’s Europa Cup and the Norgesmesterskapet.

Hana Lowry has been called into the Matildas squad that will face Germany and Haiti. Only days into her first Matildas camp, Joe Montemurro, Matildas Head Coach, listed Lowry’s name along with Daniela Galić and Alana Murphy, praising their recent club performances and told media:

“They’re names that I want you to remember because I really do believe that they’re going to be the next generation of midfielders, and I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about the amount of talented midfielders that we have in Australia.” (Football Australia)

With key Matildas midfielders missing across the international break including Kyra Cooney-Cross and Katrina Gorry, Lowry may have her chance to make her senior international debut. Australia, having already qualified for the World Cup, are preparing for the tournament with hopes of silverware after just missing placement and coming 4th in the 2023 home tournament. Lowry has a chance to impress Montemurro ahead of squad selection for the World Cup in 2027. Lowry being a left-footed midfielder would bring depth to the Matildas midfield in the World Cup. The Australian national team has very few left-footed players and only Alex Chidiac as a left-footed midfielder currently.
