More than a game: How Southampton FC and their foundation are building a stronger community

Rain stormed St. Mary’s Stadium as 1st and 5th in the Barclays Women Championship took to the pitch- Southampton FC Women v Birmingham City Women.

But the weather didn’t dampen the meaning behind this matchday.

It was chosen to spotlight the work of the Saints Foundation, the official charity partner of Southampton Football Club. They encourage the SO14 postcode to partake in one or many of their community projects.

This game, and the Russel Martin XI charity game the week before, highlighted their health, employability and gender equality projects. Using the two games to promote their campaign meant their motives were broadcast to over 8000 spectators.

Volunteers from across the area joined together to support those who need help the most, offering exercise classes, adult social activities, mental health support. The key focus is on helping men and young people, helping people get back on their feet and providing disability football sessions.

Additionally, they aim to challenge discriminatory behaviour towards girls and women in the city of Southampton, with hopes to make the area more comfortable and enjoyable to live in. They are also directing them into leadership roles in order to “even the playing field.”

Half-time in the Women’s Championship game saw children participate in ‘sleeping-bag races’ alongside the touchline of the pitch, showcasing the fun and social opportunities available at the Foundation. Smiles were plastered across their faces as the crowd of 2000 spectators cheered alongside them.

Despite the “Saints” losing 2-0, spectators left with more than just a score; they left inspired to support a better future for Southampton.
